There was a huge applause at a packed community meeting in Oughterard last Wednesday for Galway TD Noel Grealish over remarks he made about economic migrants abusing the asylum system in order to move to Ireland.

Grealish was speaking at what was described as the biggest political meeting every held in Oughterard in opposition to any plans to accommodate asylum seekers at the Connemara Gateway Hotel. Reports suggest as many as 800 to 1,00 locals showed up at the meeting from a population of around 1,500.

Leaflets were handed out at the meeting informing the community that in 2016, Eurostat revealed that 90% of asylum seekers in Ireland were not considered genuine. However, in 2017, the ESRI revealed that 80% of deportation orders against failed asylum seekers are nev

Niall Boylan spoke to Bernie and Tom about the ongoing opposition to any asylum centre in Oughterard.

Bernie told Niall that after the monster meeting last night in the town, government officials did promise they would look at all their concerns but that after watching Prime Time last night “you see Mr Stanton is not for turning and he doesn’t really listen to us as a community or anyone down here and it’s really upsetting.”

Bernie also said there are now rumours in the village that the hotel has been promised to Somalian people and everyone is really scared.

“Are we not allowed to stand up? We’re just a small community.”

Bernie said she would feel afraid going for a walk in the town alone if the plan went ahead.

Locals in Oughterard, Galway, tonight rejected any plans to accommodate asylum seekers at the Connemara Gateway Hotel. A packed community meeting was held in the Community Centre where a hand vote was taken. A majority of the townspeople clearly opposed any asylum plans for their town.

Gearóid Murphy who took this video has said on twitter that locals have been telling him that this was the biggest community gathering they’ve ever seen.

So far the government has refused to confirm or deny whether the Gateway hotel will be used to accommodate asylum seekers but Cllr Tom Welby told Niall Boylan last Friday that he believed this was the case.

The Niall Prenderville Show on Red Fm heard from callers over Riverside park hotel in Macroom being turned into emergency accommodation for asylum seekers without any consultation from the locals.

Mick Mulcahy heard that the hotel had fallen into disrepair but then new owners bought it three weeks ago. They informed employees they were going to close the hotel for three weeks but then a week later a bus arrived outside the hotel “sneaking in” asylum seekers. The staff were shocked as anyone else.

Hotels changing hands or being leased out before abruptly being turned into accommodation for asylum seekers is a common occurrence in Ireland as was the case in Rooskey and Rosslare.

This week Hollywood Developments started work at Balseskin Refugee Reception Centre in Finglas, North Dublin, to double the capacity of asylum seekers from 350 to 700 residents, as Ireland flings opens its doors to all comers from Africa and Asia. The centre is a fully catered reception facility where all meals etc. are provided and all the needs of so called refugees are taken care of. They can come and go as they please and are provided free transport to Mosque, town, Post Office to collect their benefits, doctors, hospital, etc. etc.
