HUNGARY’S GOVERNMENT IS greatly increasing financial aid and subsidies for families with several children, the country’s prime minister said yesterday.
The measures announced by Viktor Orban during his “state of the nation” speech are meant to encourage women to have more children and reverse Hungary’s population decline.
The benefits include a lifetime personal income-tax exemption for women who give birth and raise at least four children; a subsidy of 2.5 million forints (€7,817) towards the purchase a seven-seat vehicle for families with three or more children; and a low-interest loan of 10 million forints (€31,271) for women under age 40 who are marrying for the first time.
Orban, who has made “zero tolerance” for immigration his main theme in the past four years and was elected to a third consecutive term last April, said the initiative is meant to “ensure the survival of the Hungarian nation”.

Exactly 69 years ago, on February 8th, 1950, the fledgling German Democratic Republic(GDR) officially debuted its security service, dedicated to monitoring and preventing outside influences – particularly from the West.

In the latest frustrated comment from the EU as Brexit dealings crumble, European Commission boss Jean-Claude Juncker said his job in Brussels was “hell.” The quip came after another top EU official spoke of a hell for Brexiteers.
The Devil’s domain was first mentioned by EU Council president Donald Tusk, when he lambasted the UK authorities over their attempts to change the already negotiated withdrawal agreement with the bloc.

France’s “yellow vest” movement demonstrated against alleged police violence in rallies across the country Saturday, as nearly 60 lawyers denounced the treatment of protesters in the courts.
The latest marches came a day after France’s top court threw out a bid to ban weapons that shoot 40-millimeter rubber projectiles blamed for a number of serious injuries.
Thousands of protesters took part in a “march of the injured” in Paris calling for a ban on the weapons.
One of the movement’s leading figures Jerome Rodriguez, who was hit in the eye at last Saturday’s demonstration, was greeted warmly by fellow demonstrators.
