Carickmacross: In a case that has dragged on for years involving a Somalian “Asylum seeker”, it is estimated that the state, i.e. taxpayers, paid over 70,000 Euros for a Barrister, Lawyer and Translator for a charge in which a mere 300 Euros fine was issued. The fact that this criminal with prior conviction in his home country, took away the life of two young men, one a pillar of Irish Society, a law student, seems to be completely ignored.

Mick Barry, Solidarity/PBP TD for Cork North Central, told Katie Hannon on RTÉ’s Late debate that he believed that the “intervention by the extreme right” in Oughterard was “probably the most successful intervention for the extreme-right in any community in this country so far.”

According to Newstalk, the Department of Justice has said the withdrawal of the Oughterard bid was “disappointing” and will “exacerbate a very serious situation in terms of a shortage of accommodation for those who come to Ireland seeking accommodation”. They warned Ireland was “perilously close” to a situation where accommodation cannot be offered to asylum seekers.

There was a huge applause at a packed community meeting in Oughterard last Wednesday for Galway TD Noel Grealish over remarks he made about economic migrants abusing the asylum system in order to move to Ireland.

Grealish was speaking at what was described as the biggest political meeting every held in Oughterard in opposition to any plans to accommodate asylum seekers at the Connemara Gateway Hotel. Reports suggest as many as 800 to 1,00 locals showed up at the meeting from a population of around 1,500.
